From the Banks of Brown Creek - Spring, 2010

Hello from the gang at Brown Creek,

Brown Creek Ranch Cabin & YardThis has been a long time coming so grab a cup of coffee and relax… there’s so much to tell you about.

We are now into our 7th summer season with our Bed & Breakfast and we are enjoying it more than ever. We have changed our mandate a bit here for this year and that is that we will no longer be offering riding to our guests. This was a difficult decision to make but with the boys leaving home this summer (our summer helpers/wranglers) and the amount of work that has to be done we just couldn’t make it work. We are still offering everything else: accommodations, all meals, extended stays, Bed & Breakfast and one night stays as well. For now this just works better for our family but I do realize that this will not meet many requirements that our guests have and for that I do apologize.

Brown Creek Ranch sunsetWe again had our bull sale in March 2010 and we would like to say a huge thank you to our customers for their support and trust in our program. This portion of our business is very important to us and we want to do what we can to help you push the scales down at weaning time with your calves or to have beautiful replacement quality heifers in your herds. Thank you for making our sale a success! We think there were about 150 people at the Stavely Auction Market that day and this year we had Barry Johnson from the Elks bar-b-que the prime rib for us… it was amazing!! Thanks again Barry. Thanks to the Auction market staff for all of your help and thanks also to Brent Carey and Rob Bergevin our auctioneers.

Big BerthaWe finished up calving at the end of March and had a very successful season this year. We had 8 sets of twins this year. We had to go and buy a milk cow to mother the “extra’s”! Not all twins survived, a few were still born but the milk cow or “Bertha” is raising 4 babies and she loves them all like they were her’s. I love it when I see them all nursing at once… 2 calves on each side of her and she just waits patiently until they are done. We have a whole new crop of bull calves this year and I can hardly wait to “tame” them. After they are weaned they go to a pen at the neighbor’s house and we feed them twice a day, they become very quiet and eventually we can pet and scratch them. My “pet” this year was 1W, on sale day he weighed 1434 pounds and he followed me around like a big dog wanting to be scratched… I think I could have scratched him for hours and he wouldn’t have gotten tired of it.

Shiloe - click to enlargeA new addition to our home is our dog Shiloe. He is a Border Collie cross and is about 18 months old now. He is a great friend and pet but he does like to chase cars so if you driving in don’t be alarmed if he chases your car all the way into our place it’s just something he thinks he needs to do… we realize that this could be detrimental to his health but can’t seem to break him!!

High School RodeoThe boys have been busy with High School Rodeo again this year. Ty had a pretty good year, he ended up good and placed 5th at the last two rodeos he roped at and Chancey has made it to the Alberta Finals, which will be held June 11 – 13.  We are very excited about it, this will be our family getaway for the year… I love rodeos!!  Good Luck Chancey! If they place in the top 10 in this rodeo then they will go to Wyoming for the Nationals.

Chloe - 4H BeefChloe has been a busy girl this year too with dance and 4H, she raised a heifer this year but didn’t take her to the show, he heifer was out with the bull and we didn’t want to create any stress from the show for her during breeding time. She is the first and last heifer calf out of 17J which has been one of our very top end Red Angus Pure-bred cows so we really want to carry on her progeny. We will have to say goodbye to 17J this year as she has just gotten old and very crippled up. She did “borrow” a steer for the Chinook Junior Stock Show which was in April and showed in the Showmanship class for Juniors and placed 2nd. She also borrowed a steer for the Showmanship class on Achievement Day on June 1 and placed 1st in our club for Juniors. That was so fun and she was so glad to still be able participate, thanks Layne for letting us borrow “Rico” and thanks Michelle for letting us borrow your steer too!  Miss Holly has been singing again this year and had her year end recital last week, it was really nice and I thought she sang beautifully… I’m not partial at all!! She loves it and practices all the time.

Ty Lane - 2010 gradWe are gearing up for summer here but before that we will celebrate a graduation in our family. Ty will graduate this year and go on to work for the summer before going to school in the spring. We are really excited about it!

Brown Creek Ranch - springWe are looking forward to seeing you here at the ranch, we hope to make your stay a memorable and relaxing one. Thank you to everyone who came and stayed with us during the winter and spring, we are so glad that you came! Have a wonderful summer and we hope to see you soon…

Thank you to all our guests who came to visit in 2008, it was a lot of fun and so great to meet you all. Thank you for all of the Christmas cards too!

We had an amazing fall but unfortunately Mother Nature has hit with a vengeance and we have been having long bouts of very cold temperatures, wind and a lot of snow!  This week is supposed to warm up and begin melting but I think some of these drifts will be here until June, the kids are having fun though.

Christmas was a really nice time for our family and we spent it back in Texas with my family and had a wonderful time. It was so good to see everyone again and let the kids play and get to know their cousins a little better. The weather there was really nice so we have had break from the winter back here in Alberta. Thanks Mom & Dad for having us all there, we loved being with you! And thank you to our neighbors for looking after the cattle and chores while we were away, we have been so blessed to have such great friends and neighbors.

Calving will start very soon for us, the end of this month should bring our first calf. I hope the weather improves by then. We have set calving back a little this year for our pure-bred cattle anyway, our commercial cattle always calved in February but this year they will all be having their babies in February and March. We are also preparing for our up-coming bull sale at the end of March. We spent this past Saturday here with Anne & Quentin Stevick taking pictures of the yearling bulls for the catalogue. The boys brought the bulls into the squeeze and combed them to loosen up the straw in the coats and then we used a hot air blower to blow all the dirt out of the hair and make them look nice. It’s like a beauty salon for cattle!! I actually enjoy grooming them, before the sale we’ll be giving them all a bath… that’s fun! When we’re done they look good (shiny and fluffy) and I look really bad (dull and dirty)!! It’s like giving a 1400 pound dog a bath!

Brown Creek Ranch Cow & Bull CalfWe thank you all so much for your business in 2008 and look forward to meeting all of our new guests in 2009 and we are looking forward to a visit with our return guests this year as well. We wish you all a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!

Best Wishes from the Lane Family at Brown Creek Ranch
